As a Chief Data Officer you will help to develop interdisciplinary preparedness science strategically.
Job description
We are looking for a Chief Data Officer to strengthen our team. In close collaboration with the PDPC Leadership, you have a key role in strategically developing a Data and Information Hub to facilitate the cross-pollination of data and knowledge from across the center and with international partners. As Chief Data Officer you will:
- Develop the strategy of the PDPC Data and Information Hub.
- Draw up the PDPC’s data objectives in cooperation with data experts at EUR, EMC, and TU DELFT and define a schedule of requirements.
- Ensure interoperability of data amongst the various work packages.
- Monitor the differing data requirements and the divergent practical challenges across the various projects.
- Engage possible third parties as data providers within the PDPC.
- Devise and propose data solutions and provide an indication of the estimated lead time, required resources and preconditions staffing, budget, and quality for the respective implementations.
- Draw up a cohesive program of data developments that support the PDPC’s strategic objectives.
- Promote timely approval of PDPC data strategy by all relevant PDPC stakeholders and governance bodies.
- Act as a point of contact for the PDPC on data issues and hold consultations with PDPC partners.
- Monitor the progress of PDPC’s data development, adjust with corrective actions in case of deviations, and ensure periodic reporting is completed.
- Ensure adequate documentation and sustainability of the PDPC Data and Innovation Hub.
- Map the national (and international) data landscape of pandemics and water and climate related disasters.
- Establish and maintain contacts with PDPC stakeholders and users on data matters.
- Provide presentations and other forms of knowledge transfer for PDPC stakeholders and users.
- Follow internal and external data developments relevant to the PDPC.
- Maintain internal and external networks for data issues.
- Work closely with ODISSEI, the national infrastructure for social sciences in the Netherlands.
Qualification and skills
- You are independent, responsible and motivated, with the ability to work flexibly as part of a team.
- You have a background in a relevant technical field, with a passion for innovations that support science and research.
- You have managerial experience in delivery of large, complex, high-end projects including a wide range of diverse stakeholders, preferably in a scientific field.
- Experience of working across disciplinary borders is particularly valuable.
- You have a successful track record of writing large scale funding proposals with a data infrastructure focus.
- You are well organized and have attention to detail.
- You can communicate well and have professional oral and written command of English (C1-level CEFR or equivalent) and preferably also Dutch (C1).

Work environment
Erasmus University Rotterdam, Erasmus Medical Centre, and Delft University of Technology have joined forces in the Pandemic and Disaster Preparedness Center (PDPC). The PDPC aims to prepare society for future pandemics and disasters by carrying out research on how to build resilience through effective crisis prevention, preparedness, and recovery measures. Convergence of the technical, medical and social sciences is essential for developing the next generation of approaches to disasters and pandemics.
The PDPC is based on the unique combination of world-renowned expertise on infectious diseases, climate research, research into floods and other water-related emergencies, empirical sociology, and crisis management. To kick-start the long-term research agenda, several Frontrunner projects were launched in 2022. These projects are organized in and around doctoral programmes and living labs. The PDPC is currently running a programme with a budget of € 4 million annually, and some 90 research affiliates spread over 30 implementing partners.
Terms of employments
- You will receive a temporary position for 1 year.
- The gross monthly salary amounts to a maximum of € 7.279,- (scale 13) depending on your education and workexperience and based on a fulltime workweek.
- Excellent fringe benefits, such as a 13th month that is already paid out in November and a individual travel expense package.
- Pension insurance with ABP. We take care of approximately 2/3 of the monthly contribution.
- Special benefits, such as a incompany physiotherapist and bicycle repairer. And there is also a gym where you can work on your fitness after work.
