Unlocking potential: Collaborative success with RSM students
At Convergence Health & Technology, we are privileged to have access to world-class expertise and cutting-edge research infrastructure across Erasmus MC, TU Delft, and EUR. Through convergence, scientists from these institutes have collaborated extensively and gained deeper insights into each other’s strengths. A fine example is the collaboration between an RSM MBA Graduate, Eriko Utama Halim, and researchers Dr. Jie Zhou and Prof. Amir Zadpoor at TU Delft that led to commercialization roadmap for degradable, biocompatible bone implants, as part of the Accelerator Initiative.
We’re thrilled to share the successful outcome of the commercialization strategy developed through the Accelerator, connected to the Flagship Healthy Joints initiative and led by Dr. Jie Zhou and Prof. Amir Zadpoor at TU Delft.
This initiative centres on a cutting-edge technology: degradable, biocompatible bone implants that naturally dissolve in the body, eliminating the need for a second surgery. With a successful pre-clinical formulation—a rare milestone globally—the primary objective of this Accelerator was to design a viable commercialization roadmap to advance this innovation toward clinical use and market adoption.
To bridge the gap between lab and market, Eriko Utama Halim, an RSM MBA graduate, developed a comprehensive strategy to support future commercialization.
The strategy proposed innovative market entry points:
- Sports injuries
- Age-related frailty
- Complex fractures resistant to standard treatments
- Small animal orthopedics
Report in Regenerative Medicine
A detailed report was produced, outlining key pathways, risks, and opportunities to move the technology forward. The approach was informed by academic insights, including the recent publication by Zhou et al. in Regenerative Medicine — “Additive manufacturing of biodegradable porous metals for bone repair”.
Congratulations to the team for blending pioneering science with strategic business thinking—bringing the future of bone repair one step closer!

We have created 3D-printed biodegradable bone implants that can heal bone defects. After 5 years of intensive research, we are now ready to take the next step of bringing these innovative implants to clinical practice. This involves the concerted efforts of researchers, clinicians, entrepreneurs, regulatory bodies, and investors across multiple disciplines.
