Renske Keizer

Erasmus University Rotterdam

Healthy Start Academic Lead, Professor in Family Sociology

Renske Keizer is professor in Family Sociology at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. She has established an independent research line on how inequalities in child outcomes develop through parenting practices across childhood and adolescence, and how context may buffer or strengthen parents’ role in this development of inequalities. As answering these questions requires an interdisciplinary approach, Renske’s work is at the crossroads of sociology, demography, developmental psychology, pedagogy, and epidemiology.

Her ambition is to further advance inter- and transdisciplinary collaboration to tackle pressing societal challenges, in particular those related to family life, social inequality, and child development. As the complexities of these issues extend beyond disciplinary boundaries, she keeps aiming to strengthen partnerships across sociology, psychology, public health, urban planning, and industrial engineering to develop innovative, evidence-based solutions.

Keizer’s work has received several prestigious grants (NWO-VENI, NWO-VIDI, NWO-VICI, ERC-StG), and the Joannes Juda Groen Junior Prize for excellent and innovative interdisciplinary research (2020). From 2019 -2024, she was an elected member of The Young Academy of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). From 2025, she has been an elected member of the Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen.
