Emily Scott
PDPC
Postdoctoral Researcher UNITY
My name is Emily Scott, and I am a postdoctoral researcher working on the UNITY project at the PDPC. This is an exciting project where we aim to develop a multi-disciplinary, evidence-integrated framework to provide policy advice in the event of a pandemic. My task, together with others involved in the UNITY project, will be to develop the integrated framework and further work on improving the framework through an iterative process that will involve testing through simulations.
I have a background in Biomedical Sciences followed by a Master’s in Public Health, after which I spent more than two years at the European Centre for Disease prevention and Control (ECDC) in Epidemic Intelligence during the COVID-19 pandemic. Following this I decided to pursue a Doctor in Public Health at the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam focussing on subjective health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic, where I came across the PDPC during my PhD. I believe that my educational background prepared me well for working in pandemic preparedness, given the strong biomedical focus due to the infectious disease agent, as well as the widespread and complex impacts a pandemic can have on the publics health. Furthermore, having worked at the ECDC allowed me to gain an insight into the procedures and systems during a Public Health Emergency.
The progressive and dynamic research topics that are undertaken at the PDPC make this a very innovative place to work, and I particularly find the strong focus on collaboration extremely motivating. In the coming years, I hope to be able to say that UNITY, in collaboration with our partners, has succeeded in developing an integrated advisory framework that is being utilised during future outbreaks, which are unfortunately inevitable!
