Healthy Start PhD
Charlotte is one of the PhD candidates for the Healthy Start ambition ‘youth participation and involvement’. Within her research she focusses on how youth involvement can contribute to understanding and addressing street harassment. Working together with youth and youth workers, her work aims to uncover the underlying drivers of street harassment perpetration. Throughout the project, different approaches to youth participation are developed and applied to study how these contribute to a greater sense of being heard.
Charlotte collaborates with different stakeholders including different youth welfare organisations in Rotterdam (including SOL, Wmo Radar, Gro-Up and DOCK) and the Municipality of Rotterdam’s working group on street harassment.
Supervised by Prof. Dr. Jeroen van der Waal, Dr. Lysanne te Brinke, and Dr. Milene Gonçalves and collaborating with IDE graduation students Robin Smits and Juliëtte van Driel, Charlotte’s project engages youth in order to contribute to a better understanding of street harassment and to develop interventions to address street harassment among youth.
Before starting this PhD, Charlotte worked as a researcher and evaluator on sexual and reproductive health and rights primarily focusing on youth participation, youth activism and advocacy and health promotion of young people in Sub-Saharan Africa.
