RIGH:T consortium established for responsible deployment of generative AI in health care

News – June 2025

A group of leading healthcare institutions are joining forces to accelerate the use of generative AI in healthcare in a responsible way. The aim is a joint approach to this complex and rapidly developing technology. These AI applications offer opportunities for, for example, reducing the administrative burden in healthcare.

The healthcare sector is under increasing pressure due to an increasing demand for care and a shortage of healthcare professionals. Healthcare providers spend twenty to forty percent of their time on administrative tasks, which is at the expense of the time they can spend on patient care. Generative AI offers opportunities to reduce the administrative burden, but it is essential that this technology is deployed safely and responsibly before it is widely adopted in healthcare.

Validation framework

In order to be able to use generative AI safely and responsibly, RIGH:T has received a grant from ZonMw for the development of a validation framework. This framework should make it clear when an AI application is good enough for use in the entire healthcare sector and provide a framework for suppliers to guarantee the quality of their technology.

After developing the validation framework, the consortium is also focusing on two other goals: a valuable implementation and sustainable upscaling. This involves ensuring effectiveness, cost, acceptance and application by healthcare providers and the perspective of patients when using generative AI. After that, sustainability, environmental impact and funding will also be looked at as soon as AI is deployed on a large scale.

Why RIGH:T?

The RIGH:T initiative comes from the healthcare sector itself. It focuses on these obstacles and wants to bring generative AI to healthcare quickly but responsibly. Although AI in healthcare is experiencing great growth, less than 2 percent of the AI models developed are actually applied in clinical practice. The reason for this is the lack of validation studies, laws and regulations, and the slow implementation of technology within healthcare institutions. The RIGH:T consortium focuses on these obstacles and wants to bring generative AI to the entire healthcare sector quickly but responsibly.

By working together, healthcare institutions can share their knowledge and expertise, so that generative AI can be used effectively and safely throughout Dutch healthcare. This prevents institutions from having to reinvent the wheel and ensures a collaborative approach to this complex and rapidly evolving technology.

The RIGH:T consortium is also working with other stakeholders, including patient organizations and technology experts, to create broad support for the responsible implementation of generative AI in healthcare in the broadest sense of the word.
