Labs & Communities

Our Labs & Communities cut across our core research themes: Delta Systems, City, and Port. This means that all our activities and projects touch on these themes, enabling researchers and partners to collaborate in a more open, structured, and transdisciplinary way. These labs are spaces in Rotterdam where we develop, test, and implement scientific research and social innovation. Each Lab is a real-world research hub, run by a variety of societal partners, and they focus on practical, hands-on projects with societal impact.

What You’ll Find in Our Labs

Each Lab combines three core elements to support collaborative research and learning:

1. Research Infrastructure– Tools, equipment, sensors, and data needed for research (like sensing devices and specialized equipment).

2. Thematic or Geographic Focus– A clear research agenda around a specific theme or location.

3. Learning Network– A community of researchers, students, and professionals who meet regularly to share knowledge and ideas.

The exact composition of partners and activities for each lab depends on the topic and is currently under development, so each lab may vary in structure and focus.
