NPO 2: Science in the Line of Fire of Trump

“The Trump administration is launching a harsh attack on science: grants are being cut, publications are disappearing from the internet, and scientists are being silenced.”

What Does This Mean for the Netherlands?

On Wednesday, March 12, our Medical Director, Dr. Anja Schreijer, and our Scientific Director, Prof. Marion Koopmans, together with Marileen Dogterom, Han Dolman, Sabine Oertelt-Prigiona and Marieke de Vries discussed this during the program Focus on NPO 2.

Dr. Anja Schreijer spoke about the fear American colleagues experience when attempting to speak openly about their research. She also addressed the U.S. decision to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO) and its global impact on pandemic preparedness.

“Leaving the WHO is a highly concerning measure, as the United States contributed one-fifth of the organization’s budget. Beyond the financial aspect, this decision also means the U.S. is withdrawing from agreements outlined in the International Health Regulations, which require that any outbreak be reported to the WHO. The organization then alerts other countries, ensuring global preparedness.”

A clear example of restricted scientific freedom can be seen in the communication surrounding the recent outbreak of Avian Influenza (bird flu). Until early January, developments were being closely monitored via the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website—the U.S. equivalent of the RIVM—but suddenly, the website was taken offline.

Prof. Marion Koopmans stated that while she had anticipated significant changes, she did not expect developments of this magnitude. She expressed deep concern over scientists being silenced and how the administration undervalues their critical work.
