Naturalis report 2026: State of Dutch Biodiversity – Mosquitoes

Naturalis published the second yearly edition of the Status Report Dutch Biodiversity. In this report, you can find an update on the state of Dutch nature: how many species are there in the Netherlands? And how are they faring? For this report, PDPC Frontrunner 1 researchers Jordy van der Beek, Reina Sikkema and Koos Biesmeijer wrote a short article about the link between mosquitoes and biodiversity. Read the first paragraph below:

‘New, wetland nature areas in the Netherlands provide the ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. Although these insects make an important contribution to biodiversity, they also pose risks to public health. That is why extensive research is currently underway to determine how a biodiverse ecosystem with natural predators can control the nuisance caused by mosquitoes.’
