Medication Safety Hackathon

Erasmus MC x Medisign TU Delft

An inspiring Medication Safety Hackathon took place at Erasmus MC on 12 March, where healthcare professionals, designers, consultants and students from TU Delft worked together on innovative solutions to a crucial issue in healthcare.

‘The great involvement of the nurses and other healthcare professionals present shows that medication safety is a topic to which many want to contribute. How nice it is that in this Hackaton their experience and expertise has been included so concretely in the solution directions!’ – Karin Schuijer, Hematology sector manager

With an average of 700 medication prescriptions per day at Erasmus MC, medication safety is of paramount importance. The hackathon focused on four practical cases:

  • Medication prescriptions: Streamlining the prescribing process.
  • Medication administration: Improving the verification system, especially for IV medication.
  • Protocols: Clearer and user-friendly protocols for healthcare providers.
  • Barcode scanning: Optimisation of verification processes.

‘Areas of opportunity’.
Participants presented various ‘areas of opportunity’, ranging from process improvements and technological innovations to raising awareness: Optimisation of barcode scanners and medication pumps with smart sensors; A smarter prescribing system that shows only available medication and offers alternatives; An intuitive interface for quick access to relevant protocols.

The energy and creativity of the participants were impressive. This hackathon provided valuable insights that can contribute to a safer and more efficient healthcare system.

A special thank you to all participants, the organisation and the cooperation between Erasmus MC and Medisign TU Delft
