Sprint project: ‘Enhancing well-being and personal development for medical students’
Well-being of young physicians is decreasing and their drop-out rates are rising; a risk factor for future patient care. Within the education line VIP (Professional Identity Formation) we made a VIP-shop which is an overview of educational offerings on well-being and personal development.
Purpose
The goal of this project was to tailor the VIP shop more to the needs and assets of our medical students. This will improve their well-being and increase their sustainable employability and ensure patient care in the future.
Methods
We interviewed students. organized multiple focus groups (with students, educators, student advisors, researchers, etc). We also analyzed the literature on this topic and we searched for best practices.
Results
We received new insights in the factors that influence the success of the VIP shop, e.g. freedom of choice, information channels, and study pressure.
We also gained new ideas for products in the VIP shop; for example:
- A buddy for first-generation students
- Products with the goal to connect students from the same or another academic year; for example students as teachers or the possibility to interview students from the next phase of the education program
We also learnt that students would appreciate if we would add user experiences to every product (e.g. what other students learnt from it). Furthermore, we will use what we have learnt about factors related to educational (in)equality.
This project strengthened our collaboration with the EUR and the TU Delft and new connections were made e.g. with the first-generation students platform and the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science.
Future
We are now developing VIP stores for other programs and we will use the gained knowledge and new collaborations of this sprint project for the new VIP stores.
