From complex research to a clear visual story
Introduction
Junior researchers within the Healthy Joints Flagship recently organised a Graphical Abstract Workshop to strengthen both science communication and connections within the Flagship community. The session brought together PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers from different disciplines and institutions involved in the programme.
Bringing research together
One of the goals of the afternoon was to connect junior researchers working across different universities and departments within the Healthy Joints Flagship. While many researchers collaborate within specific work packages, opportunities to exchange ideas across the broader Flagship are less frequent. The workshop provided a shared setting to meet, learn from each other, and discuss ongoing research.
Learning to visualise research
The workshop was delivered by The Online Scientist, who introduced participants to key principles of graphical abstract design. Researchers then worked on translating their own studies into clear visual summaries, receiving direct feedback from the trainers.
Strengthening the junior community
Seventeen researchers participated in the workshop, which was organised by Myrthe van den Berg, Sylvia Kaljouw and Fleur Boel, researchers within the Healthy Joints Flagship. The afternoon concluded with an informal gathering, allowing participants to continue discussions and strengthen connections within the community.
The topic of graphical abstracts will return during the upcoming Healthy Joints annual meeting, helping researchers to further visualise and share the research taking place across the programme’s work packages.
