Finding each other in port transition: Jantine Schuit on collaboration

The transition of the port brings together complex and interconnected challenges. Climate adaptation, economic development and spatial planning all converge in the same space, making collaboration across domains essential rather than optional.

A complex challenge requires connection

In a recent interview, partly made possible by Resilient Delta, Jantine Schuit, Rector Magnificus of Erasmus University Rotterdam, reflects on exactly this challenge. Her message is clear: “We need to find each other.” In complex transitions, connecting knowledge, policy and practice is essential to move towards workable solutions.

From symposium to conversation

The interview originates from the port symposium, where researchers, policymakers and professionals came together around the future of the port. As Resilient Delta, we were involved as facilitator and connector of the different parties.

From that role, we contribute to bringing perspectives together and making the
insights that emerge visible. This conversation is a direct result of that.

The role of Resilient Delta

Resilient Delta works to connect research, policy and practice around urgent port-related transition challenges in the delta. Our academic lead on the port theme, Vinzenz Baumer Escobar, is closely involved in this collaboration and contributes to strengthening these connections.

This aligns with a broader movement that we support and help shape as a network.

A next step: open innovation network

The insights from the symposium and the interview are already being taken further. This past Monday marked the first meeting of an open innovation network on port transition.

Within this network, different parties work together on knowledge exchange, shared questions and concrete applications. In doing so, the focus shifts from exploration to organising and implementation.
