On October 2, Sam Riedijk, project leader of the DNA-Dialogues and Healthy Start Education Fellow, will speak at the Lof der Geneeskunst (Praise of Medicine) on the topic ‘It is in our DNA.’ A fantastic platform for a fantastic project and scientist!

Lof der Geneeskunst is the free public lecture of the Erasmus MC that takes place every year on the first Friday of October in the Doelen. This year the theme is ‘It is in our DNA’.

This free public lecture focuses on how DNA research is changing our view of humanity, medicine, and society. Three leading researchers will guide the audience through the major questions surrounding DNA: how is DNA research changing medicine today and tomorrow? What has it changed about how we view the human being? And where do the ethical boundaries lie when we are capable of more and more?

Between the presentations, students from Codarts University of the Arts will give circus, music, and dance performances. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity to meet in the foyer of the Doelen.

About the DNA-Dialogues of Sam Riedijk

In her work, Sam sees how choices surrounding pregnancies are changing due to technological advancements in DNA research. The CRISPR-Cas technology in particular, which allows the DNA of embryos to be modified, presents moral dilemmas. What are we going to do with this, and what are we not? Through the DNA-Dialogues, she has explored the values ​​and perspectives of citizens, patients, journalists, and policymakers.
