Impact vs. Effort workshop

On July 10th 2025, the transdisciplinary NURTURE project (SHP: Nurture – Convergence) team organized an energizing, inspiring Impact vs. Effort workshop at Erasmus MC. Several nurses, technology professionals, organizational leads, and researchers gathered around the table, to collectively discuss 20 innovation opportunities that could improve nurses’ daily work experience and patient care. These opportunities were collected by shadowing, interviewing and journey mapping with nurses from different wards.

Together, we:
• Discussed which innovation opportunities would have the biggest impact for nurses when taken on?
• Estimated which innovation opportunities would be feasible from both a technology and organizational effort perspective?
• Voted for a selection of innovation opportunities to further assess and address.

Key takeaways:
• The innovation opportunities with the most votes were: “registration/documentation load”, “looking for and fetching materials”, and “constantly being interrupted by alarms”. All three scored high on impact for the nurses’ work, but also required significant effort to address them.
• Also several “low-hanging fruits” were identified, like “running to answer patient calls” and “coordination with facility staff”. These scored high on impact for nurses’ work, but low on effort to address.
• The discussion resulted in powerful transdisciplinary awareness, understanding, and shared insights on innovation opportunities. It also revealed the need for transdisciplinary co-creation to drive real, positive change in nursing work.
