The twelve competences for transdisciplinary work
From first steps to in-depth learning
Working across boundaries takes more than knowledge of your own field.
It requires an open mindset, methods to explore problems together, and skills to deal with uncertainty, different perspectives and friction. We brought these together in twelve competences. Start wherever you like: for each competence you will find modules and learning materials to get started.
Introduction to transdisciplinarity
Stepping into uncertainty, where no single right answer exists and you still make choices.
Mindset
An open and curious attitude that lets you think and work beyond your own field.
Systems thinking
Seeing how everything is connected, and tackling the system rather than the symptom.
Sensemaking
Finding meaning in complex situations by spotting patterns instead of looking for quick answers.
Joint problem framing
Deciding together with partners from science and practice what the problem actually is.
Epistemic awareness
Understanding how you know what you know, and recognising that your own perspective is never neutral.
Group dynamics
Working together in diverse teams, where friction leads to new insights.
Planning
Designing a process in which different partners, timelines and interests come together.
Ethics
Reflecting on the consequences of your choices, and on who benefits and who does not
Futures literacy
Using the future to explore what is possible, not to predict what will come.
Creativity
Creating something new that does not yet exist, and moving from idea to action.
Reflexivity
Looking back on your own role and growth, and daring to change both the problem and yourself.
