Transformative research module: Systems Thinking

Discover the power of systems thinking and build a systemic perspective to tackle complex challenges from research to daily life.

Systems Thinking

This module is an introduction to systems thinking. The purpose of this module is to invite you to explore how you can use systems thinking in your research, education, or in your daily life. Join Dominique Troost in exploring what systems thinking is and why it is crucial to approach complex problems from a systemic perspective. Dominique and Jotte de Koning then discuss what systems thinking means to us, what it looks like in practice, and how you can develop a systemic worldview yourself. In doing so, we cover several core elements, such as resilience and systems mapping.

Our Experts

Dominique Troost

is a PhD candidate in the Youth & Family team at the Department of Psychology, Education and Child Studies (DPECS). In her research, she is examining the effectiveness of interventions for families living in a context of poverty in Rotterdam. Her research project is a collaboration between the municipality of Rotterdam, Kinderhulp, Erasmus University Rotterdam, and Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. Dominique was introduced to systems thinking in 2020 when she was a master’s student at KU Leuven doing a transdisciplinary course in which students worked in teams on wicked problems. Her team ended up developing a video game that teaches players the importance of approaching wicked problems from a systemic and transdisciplinary perspective. In 2021, Dominique became a coach for this course, and the group of students she coached wrote a manifesto in which they also highlighted the importance of systems thinking in order to prepare young people for the uncertainties that the future will hold.

Jotte de Koning

is an Assistant Professor of Design for Sustainability at Delft University of Technology (TUD). She is an active member of the Transition and Systemic Design communities. In 2019 she co-founded the Delft Systemic Design Lab, she is currently acting co-director. The Delft Systemic Design Lab collaborates across Europe (Antwerp, Turin, Oslo) with other systemic design communities. A focal point in jotte her research is understanding under what conditions co-creation can be an effective approach for transitions and how our current approach to co-creation needs to be adapted to fit long-term multi-stakeholder processes.
