Early identification of emotional problems in adolescence|  0.8-1.0 FTE

About this position

The flagship PROTECt ME (Proactive Technology-supported prevention and Mental Health in adolescence) is focusing on the mental wellbeing of youth.
You will be positioned within the Erasmus MC department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry/Psychology which is one of the leading partners of the flagship PROTECt ME. The mission of this program is to optimize well-being of all youth, by proactively tackling these problems, to move from cure to care, and to detect emotional problems before they emerge and impair lives.

This PhD candidate will aim to better identify dynamic risk factors that contribute to the early identification of emotional problems using cutting edge real-time measures, smartphone and wearable technology, and data modeling (Work Package 1). Setting up and performing a new study among adolescents using a variety of innovative eHealth tools will be part of this project.

Collaboration within our multidisciplinary team with clinicians, data scientist, industrial design, machine learning and AI experts will be key to achieve our goals.


We are looking for candidates with:

  • A MSc-degree in psychology (research master), neurosciences, artificial intelligence, computer science or a related discipline (also candidates close to graduating are encouraged to apply)
  • A strong quantitative background. Experience with R or Python is required; you have experience with structural equation modeling, multi-level modeling or other complex data analyses. Experience with ESM/EMA modeling and large datasets, and speaking Dutch is an advantage.
  • Affinity and preferably experience with writing research papers
  • Excellent English conversation, writing skills, and presentation skills
  • Dutch conversation and writing skills are mandatory;
  • As you will be part of a multidisciplinary team, good communication skills are essential and you are comfortable working in a multidisciplinary environment.

About this Flagship

Many young people in the Netherlands (between the ages of 12 and 25) struggle with mental health issues such as feelings of depression. They often have to wait a long time for adequate care. The aim of the Convergence Flagship programme PROTECt ME is to develop tools that will make it possible to identify these people sooner. The programme also wants to deliver technological solutions that can help young people faster and better, while at the same time relieving the burden on the care system.

You will be employed by Erasmus MC, Rotterdam.

The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry/Psychology of Erasmus MC/Sophia with approximately two hundred employees is the only independent university child and adolescent psychiatric department in the Netherlands with its own research lines and professors located in a children’s hospital. The department is constantly evolving and focuses on internationally recognized scientific research, combined with high-quality university patient care in the university medical center and providing various training and education.

What we offer

  • A challenging position within the largest University Medical Center (UMC) in the Netherlands with high ambitions in the field of healthcare, education and research;
  • You will start with a contract for one year (12 months) in accordance with the CAO UMC 2022-2023, with the possibility of extension for another three years (36 months).
  • Salary range is 2.631-3.336 euro Gross in full-time employment. The monthly wage will increase yearly;
  • Excellent fringe benefits, such as a 13th month that is already paid out in November and an individual travel expense package;
  • Pension insurance with ABP. We take care of approximately 2/3 of the monthly contribution;
  • Special benefits, such as an in company physiotherapist and bicycle repairer. And there is also a gym where you can work on your fitness after work.
